Myanmar Women Entrepreneur’s Association Bags ASEAN Award For The Third Time

Entrepreneurship for women has been a big part of community-based tourism in Myanmar to encourage women to take up more leading roles and provide them a social standing that is equal to men.

For a long time, women in Myanmar have shown interest to take up entrepreneurship opportunities, however, they lacked the information, emotional and financial support for their ambition.

This is where the Myanmar Women Entrepreneur’s Association (MWEA) comes in; formed to improve women’s lives through educational seminars and trainings to hone their capabilities, the association helps them to achieve success in the economic sector.

Many have gone ahead to win awards, and recently enough, five of these women have bagged the AWEN award from Thailand’s princess, making it the third time the group have received the honour.

The AWEN awards began in 2014 in ASEAN, and MWEA first received them in 2017.

“There were two winners the first time, one the second time and five this time,” award winner Daw Thiri Khit said.

The winners must have already won a local award before they are allowed to apply for the AWEN award. The requirements include the businesswoman to have led a company for at least five years and have paid taxes for at least three years. Her company must also be recognised by the government and to have been an MWEA member for at least two years.
