An ASEAN Food Festival: Connecting Through Cuisines

The ASEAN Food Festival 2019 is an event that brings together the best cuisines of all ASEAN countries to showcase Myanmar food and gastronomy cuisine on a international platform. It takes place on 17th to 18th August on the corner of 70th Street in Mandalay.

As this event celebrates the diversity of cuisines from all ASEAN nations, ambassadors from China, India, Japan, and Korea will be participating as well. Participants can look forward to connect with cultures and exotic tastes from neighbouring countries with savoury and bold options!

This event is also a platform to promote gastronomy tourism and encourage tourists to come and experience a slice of Myanmar cuisine. Therefore, local people of Myanmar are encouraged to try ASEAN cuisine and international visitors in Mandalay are welcomed to join as well. As most tourism activities take place during the green season of Myanmar, this is also a platform to promote travels in Myanmar and outdoor activities.

There are several organisations involved in putting together this event. Aside from the regional government, the Myanmar Tourism Federation and other related associations have contributed their efforts to make this event a successful one. Therefore, they have organised fun activities for participants to entertain themselves such as cooking demonstrations, tasting booths, and performances of ‘culinary art’ by the Myanmar Chef Association.

Programmes to Savour

At the culinary booth, there will be two booths allocated to each embassy to showcase their cooking demonstrations and promote their own authentic range of ASEAN cuisine.

Participants can observe the skill and passion each chef puts into the perfect creation of their dish. It is also a good opportunity to learn about the local tastes that differs from each country and region.

A food festival would not be truly complete without a food show. Thus, the Myanmar Restaurant Association will be taking part in presenting their variety of dishes that are special creations in their own ability. This is the chance for participants to view all of Myanmar’s traditional dishes and witness the special ability of each restaurant as they re-produce the dish with their own unique twist. Witness the best of what each restaurant has to offer and find one that bests suits your taste!

Visitors will be overjoyed to know that there is a tasting counter provided for those that want a sample of the most famous ASEAN and Myanmar dishes. They can also take a moment to rest at the area before moving on the sample the rest of delicacies. Lastly, a fun performance of culinary action and fruit art will take place, performed by top-notch chefs.

All of these activities are made not only for people to experience Myanmar, but is a wider approach to introduce food of other countries to the local people and visitors. As Myanmar food carries influence from its neighboring countries and vice versa, it is a suitable opportunity for people to discover the and connect with the cuisines that has complemented the food of Myanmar.
